Are federal activities necessary for exponential growth in the solar industry?

To prevent climate change’s worst impacts, we need to commercialize and scale clean technologies here in America and across the globe more quickly than ever. The United States can lead the way in developing the breakthroughs. All financially capable countries need to change the way we power the world. We must commit the resources and willpower to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

In short, we need to revolutionize the world’s physical economy. Requiring a dramatic infusion of ingenuity, funding, and focus from the federal government. No one entity but the federal government has the resources to drive the research we need. For funding, we need a fivefold increase in the current programs. The growth is based on the previous budget, starting at seven billion for clean-energy research.  Yet over $35 billion a year is invested in health and biomedical research. Putting energy on equal footing with health and biomedical would be a critical first step to create more than 370,000 jobs while also advancing a clean-energy agenda.

Another area of great need is to revolutionize how the government assists American ingenuity. There’s no central office that’s responsible for evaluating and nurturing great ideas. There is a better way, and the government could be the leader. By reducing duplication, focus the government’s efforts, and get the most innovation out of every dollar of funding.  We should create a new organization which has a goal of Energy Innovation. This is probably the most important thing the U.S. can do to lead the world in innovations that will solve climate change.

Although COVID is here now, we will kill the virus, and our country will move on. Then we should be focusing on, with even greater effort, reducing our carbon footprint. If we see climate change clearly, the U.S. can solve the world’s greatest threat with our partners worldwide.   Net-zero is the only answer to preventing disasters from the weather around the world. While at the same time assisting the rest of the world through our innovation.
