Solar Energy

The CEC prepares battery technology for all commercial and residential installs.

Last week California Energy Commission (CEC) approved the 2022 California Energy Code, which sets the building standards for new construction. In a unanimous vote, California became the first state in the country to require builders to install solar and battery storage on new commercial buildings and high-rise multifamily buildings. The approved Energy Code also includes requirements for builders to design single-family homes so battery storage can be easily added to the already existing solar system. In addition, incentives to eliminate natural gas from new buildings should increase the advantage of solar water heating technologies in the future.

Never forget that you are one of a kind. Never forget that if there wasn’t a reason to be here in all your uniqueness, you wouldn’t be here in the first place.”

“R. Buckminster Fuller”

This decision intensifies the spotlight on the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), which holds the keys to whether these standards ever go into effect. Solar PV and energy storage, whether on homes or commercial properties, directly depend on net metering tariffs that set the solar credit customers to receive for the energy their panels deliver to the grid and protect them from discriminatory utility charges.
Deep decarbonization requires an urgent focus on technology and innovation. It’s a complex challenge that will require leaders and policymakers across the globe to make difficult decisions if we’re to meet the targets set out in the Paris Agreement. But how do nations and industries approach deep decarbonization, the options available, and what practical action is needed now?

To discuss the specific actions needed to achieve deep decarbonization includes scaling up existing technology and repurposing and modernizing existing infrastructure. This requires insight from the energy transition outlook and discussing the progress of different markets striving to meet their targets under the Paris Agreement.  Finally, it requires looking at how better policy support and more innovative investments can help drive the energy transition and mitigate risks for businesses looking to cut or offset their carbon emissions.

With the dire warnings of the world’s scientists as background, today’s vote is another first-in-the-nation move by California to build a cleaner energy future literally. By incorporating solar energy and energy storage into new commercial buildings, California is extending the benefits of advanced clean energy technologies to where people work and play, not just where they live.
