Back in 2005, when I started in solar as an installer, I remember what Andy Black said about the efficiency of modules being 13%. The expected highest efficiency possible was 14% to 15%. Black stating the 13% had not changed for years. Now we are achieving efficiencies above 21%.
Thanks to the improvement of more efficient solar PV, the industry experienced a return on investment of up to 17% from 2013 through 2015 and other equipment assisted. Once the money flowed, China got involved and started manufacturing, considerably reducing the cost in all areas of the industry, most importantly PV modules.
With the US returning to manufacturing and R&D, we can expect the module efficiencies to increase and see more N-type module manufacturers. So we will see the horizon of more efficiencies. The customers go to the factories and view the production and all the documentation relating to the material’s origin, the production process, equipment, servicing, and generally, their performance.
Within one year, the imported glass production in the US will be sufficient for a few GWs. In two years, we will have manufacturers of cells and potentially wafers. In North America, we will add new production of other related solar products. I thank all the politicians who assisted in making the IRA bill happen. Also, to all my colleagues and associates, let’s keep growing, learning, and improving our industry.
