Over the last three weeks, I have written articles on humans’ effect on the planet. The articles included how we plug into electricity, our methods for making and growing things. The two remaining activities that are main contributors include how we get around and how we keep cool and stay warm.
Transportation activities (aviation, rail, shipping, heavy and light trucking) are responsible for approximately 17% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Based on projected emissions, full decarbonization of heavy-duty transportation by 2030 would cost more than $1 trillion, assuming the technology exists to make it happen. The cost will increase by $400 billion by 2050. Considering the long asset cycles in transportation and logistics (T&L), players must start taking action. Indeed, the industry is experiencing mounting pressure from customers, employees, regulators, and investors to act on emissions.
