Risk management is the process of identifying, assessing, and controlling threats to an organization’s capital and earnings. These threats, or risks, could stem from a wide variety of sources. For example, within the solar industry, high-risk areas are equipment purchases, construction processes and plans, project investment, and development.

Risk management allows organizations to attempt to prepare for the unexpected by having an experienced employee, agent, or consultant that has gone through most if not all unexpected events that would upset a successful result.  The objective is to minimize risks and extra costs before they happen. Having an expert who really understands the ins and outs within the realm of solar modules purchases reduces risk.

Purchasing of modules has changed over the years. However, early on and even today, for the commercial environment, EPC, installers, etc, are still purchasing their modules occasionally from distributors. Furthermore, when buying for utility-scale projects, most purchases are with manufacturers direct. Is this a good time for the buyers within your organization to be deciding without expert advice?

Many companies are paying for auditing as a separate part of the purchase of modules. What USD does is source your modules for you, giving you a selection of potential options. This prevents the Tier 1 manufacturer from using an OEM manufacturer to be involved with your production unless all parties agree. Most Tier 1 manufacturers are using OEM production because they cannot keep up with sales requests.

As closing remarks, we want to remind you that USD does the auditing for our customers when we obtain modules for you. We work for you to obtain the best pricing and quality audited panels: using our dedicated electrical, environmental, and mechanical testing systems. Utilizing dedicated characterization systems ensures optimal data quality and repeatability. USD’s partners calibrated equipment base is closely maintained to ensure optimal availability and reliability. Our specialized services are available for product and process qualification, raw material and supplier evaluation, ongoing reliability testing (ORT), risk assessment, lot acceptance, energy yield evaluation, and more.
