Is China the world’s “Solar King?” How does the US get a hold on the industry?

Since 2005 when I entered solar most of the manufacturers were US companies. China was entering the solar module market, but end-users were suspicious. In a blink of a few years, the industry changed, and China was the leader. Companies like Evergreen waited too long to get lower manufacturing costs.  All the US and European manufacturers got beat up with a lower and lower price per watt by the Chinese manufacturers.

“Life can be an inspiring mountain, reaching the top is not as important as finding your path.”

Anonymous,

What does it take to support US manufacturing of solar modules?  There have to be construction materials (BOM Build of Materials) at competitive prices. Although US companies manufactured raw materials, such as polysilicon, we have lost an edge in the market. Additionally, it would be best if you had glass, aluminum, and other materials in huge quantities.
The biggest question is how can we be a leader in the solar market again. We have a chance to lead the storage market, but it requires acting now.  Meaning investing in the equipment and raw materials needed and source and buy them. The US Federal Government needs to invest more into research and development. As the market grows, US companies will gain more access to materials and better pricing.

How China got such an edge is the Chinese Government invested and still invests in the manufacturers. If this is how the Chinese Government did it, does this mean the US can do the same?  I believe so, but it takes a lot of will and persistence on the US Government, and with changing parties in the White House, it becomes incredibly complicated. The US could be the world leader, but they have taken a different path and want to be the world leader in storage. Just wanting it is not enough. They require massive investment in research and development and assisting manufacturers to have an edge around the world.

Breaking news from the Biden Administration they are restricting imports of modules manufactured with polysilicon by Hoshine Silicon Co based on allegations of forced labor.
