Broad political support of renewables will continue to thrive regardless of the final results on November 3, driven by their cost-competitiveness and requirements for less expensive energy that protects our national security. Although Trump has attempted to increase the production of fossil fuels, it has not affected renewables.

The Senate has a third of the seats up for re-election, with most seats presently held by republicans. Joe Biden promised to decarbonize its power sector by 2035, but for climate eliminating changes, voters will have to stand up and be heard by voting. Ideally, balance in the Senate would prevent the requirement for changes via executive orders.

Renewable energy can achieve all the climate change goals should Democrats take both the Senate and the White House. Thereby meeting Biden’s 2035 target could require an annual renewables market of 100 gigawatts or more in some years, compared to the 30 GW of new renewables capacity expected built-in 2020.
